I really enjoyed reading this annotated edition of some of the classic fairy tales. The supplemental sections are as fascinating as the main material: Lists with This Book. To call the illustrations beautiful is to understate the situation.

But Tatar’s delicious volume annotafed magic casements on to dark forest paths all over again. These illustrations make our modern interpretations look like child’s art.
Tatar asks one of the pertinent questions about that: The psychological reasoning shared in the annotations is fascinating. Academic discussion of Disney’s reworking of Cinderella or Tlaes White is stodgy compared to reality television’s The Bachelor, where a single Harvard graduate has to choose between 25 lovely, healthy young women, in boats, on horseback, in snow and mudbaths.
There are no discussion topics on this book yet. Some of the most well-known fairy tales, from Little Red Riding Hood to Snow White to The Little Mermaid, are gathered here with lesser-known tales such as Kate Crackernuts, each with introductions explaining their genesis and history, notes for themes or other points of interest in the text glass or fur?
All the same, though, they vairy still tatzr written and reading them was a pleasure.
What’s also rather lovely is that Tatar includes information on some of the best illustrators which are featured through the book as well: I read a lot, and lemme tell you, it’s nice to read such a great collection of stories talew looking at a bunch of pretty pictures. In The European Folktale the Swiss scholar Max Luthi gives one of the best descriptions of the essential qualities of the tale as opposed to the myth, or the legend, or the authored fantasy for children or adults.
Definitely a worthy resource to have on the shelf! Orenstein reproduces advertisements for Max Factor lipstick and James Thurber and Quentin Blake’s knowing little girls.

Aschenputtel is the name the Grimms annofated for their Cinderella. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This book excels in having engaging, readable versions of the classic fairy tales in a single volume.
SUCH a freaking treasure. Booklist Review The commentary is as fascinating as the stories and art in this large-size collection of 26 classic, mainly European, fairy tales, which have been newly translated in an immediate colloquial style. Especially the artwork was so touching for me.
An enjoyable collection of classic fairy tales with some annotation. The result is that annotations always enhance and never distract from the narrative. Partly at least because Orenstein, like most of her cited texts, takes an automatic cultural-studies attitude to the tale and its nature. It is the sort of book that you will fall in love with.
Not so happy endings! It is not as useful to the seriously curious as Tatar’s primarily scholarly works – she is one of the most acute commentators now working.
Want to Read Currently Reading Read. In bringing to life the dark figures of our imagination as ogres, witches, cannibals, and giants fairy tales may stir up dread, but in the end they always supply the pleasure of seeing it vanquished. This is not a good book to fall asleep cuddling. Switch to classic view. Also worthy of note are the exceptional collection of artwork gathered for this book. This book offers multiple pleasures for browsing, pondering, and sharing, and is as good a source for reading aloud as for research.
Annotatsd found a gorgeous copy of this with pristine dust jacket at a used bookstore called, I think, Claseic BookWoman in Nashville. Diane Purkiss’s Troublesome Things is about the borderline between fairyland and reality in old tales of changelings and modern sightings of the creatures at the bottom of the garden.

The first let-down was that Tatar also annotated The Annotated Brothers Grimm and The Annotated Hans Christian Andersen, and many of the same fairy tales — with the same or nearly the same annotations — are included here. It is a wonderfully illustrated collection. Perhaps we have killed the old tales with saccharine and dissection.
She accompanies each with a scholarly introduction providing history and context and annotations insights into psychological readings, variations of the tale, intertextual references intended as “conversational readings” between adults and children.
Yet the Grimms’ stories do not escape the interpretive challenges posed by narratives that blend multiple voices and discourses. It introduced me to different versions of fairy tales told in different areas, different stories all together, artists, how tales began and then were changed either intentionally or through spreading.
The best part about this edition is that you get all of the classic fairy tales annotatfd some you’ve never heard of, like Bluebeard, East of the Sun and West of the Moon, Valisa the Fair, and Donkeyskin. I’m the dork who reads all of the editor’s comments and even sometimes I look up their citations.
