Pratchett’s Tiffany Aching books came later, but boy do they have Wise Child beat on that. Wise Child has recognizably modern content but an old type of writing for a novel. This book is a little too telling too much, almost preachy. Ik lees graag boeken uit het fantasy-genre — Harry Potter, De Hobbit — ik lees ze allemaal graag.
I got mine used online. You wouldn’t think people still confronted that Salem shit nowadays or a Spanish inquisition. Should they be getting their hooks in, though? The medieval setting, characters, and junipeer elements were all appealing, though, and I plan on reading the sequels to see what happens to Juniper and Gamal and the other residents of Cornwall.
Either could be read first, tbh. Furong looking forward to reading the sequel. I loved Juniper more than Wise Child when I was little, perhaps because Juniper is a book about a princess and I was a girl who liked princesses.

Juniper at times seemed a little too idealized, and despite the fact it was told from Wise Child’s first person POV, I felt a sort of odd disconnect between the narrator’s voice and the actual tale.

This book uuniper firmly in the realm of Thing That Are Catnip To Me, from the detailed, grounded depictions of early feudal Cornwall the historical accuracy of which I am entirely unfamiliar with to the well-rounded cast of ladies. Very much a child of her time, she experimented with LSD in her late 30s, and had the distinction of seeing her book Travelling Indescribing the experience, banned from Church of Scotland bookshops.
