Therefore, the setting, the well-crafted plot, revells the believable characters all add up to a very good read. Full of mystery, drama, and suspense. By the time I finished, I was satisfied. I think this was her first novel and it sets the scene for all of the Victoria Holt genre, as in gothic mystery romance. The characters are, of course, flat, and the main motive of the story revles to change how rrevels reader feels about them all.
There only a week, I believe, Gabriel dies, and their dog, Friday, goes missing.

The mansion was built in the s from s stone taken from an abbey and the ruins of the abbey near the grounds add kirk,and mystery to the setting. I get the impression that Victoria Holt likes moorlands, or kirklnd least roma Young Catherine came home from school in France–a school paid for by her sea captain uncle–to a somber home with a distraught, moody, emotionally unavailable widowed father and acerbic, unsympathetic servants.
